Genetic Conditions and Birth Abnormalities
Second Skin prescribes a comprehensive range of dynamic postural, body, upper limb and lower limb splints for children, adolescents and adults who have genetic conditions and birth abnormalities.
Each splint targets particular medical, therapy, client and family goals. Dynamic splints are prescribed to assist clients who have a broad spectrum of genetic disorders and birth abnormalities.
Second Skin prescribes splints for children and adults with chromosomal abnormalities, Rett Syndrome, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Charcot Marie Tooth Disease, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Omphalocele and many more.
More extensive postural or body splinting is prescribed where spinal management is the primary focus or when sitting skills, head control, sit to stand transfers, standing or walking skills, postural control and body awareness are being targeted by the client, family and therapy team. Postural and Body Splints allow easier handling and care for families, school and therapy teams.
Splints are often prescribed to improve upper limb awareness, grasp and release skills, grasp strength and dexterity. Second Skin dynamic upper limb splints are commonly prescribed to target specific functional skills such as self-care, wheelchair driving or access to technology or to assist with maintenance of posture, range or motion, skin integrity and comfort. Splints can be prescribed for clients with functional and non-functional upper limbs.
Dynamic Foot Splints may be prescribed for this client group, where appropriate, to impact positively on lower limb tonal management, foot, ankle, and toe posture and awareness in transfers and walking, and to maintain skin integrity and comfort in footwear. Dynamic Foot Splints can be prescribed to be worn with an existing ankle foot orthosis (AFO) or orthotic device where required.
